Making art has always been a creative outlet for me. I have a facility with drawing that gives me a great sense of pleasure and satisfaction. Currently, I am concentrating on larger oil paintings, continuing to explore the theme of nature's beauty through the landscape, atmospheric light and trees. Trees especially symbolize nature's magnificence and stability to me. Trees are challenging yet inviting to portray because of the dynamic quality and complexity of their many leaves and branches. They enable me to be less precise, freer and more painterly in conveying their rhythm and energy.
A painting starts first with the inspiration from nature what I observe. Working from photograph, I make conscious decisions as I paint but they are combined with many intuitive responses to the subject, as well. The work can feel like a struggle but if I persist and am successful, it progresses, coming into focus when I stand back. I am then encouraged and spurred on, somewhat amazed that the brush strokes reflect the recognizable image that originally inspired me. As I have painted over the years, I am no longer a slave to the photograph but am more interested in what I can take from it and make into a painting. If I am happy with the composition, have resolved any problems and the painting retains freshness and spontaneity, I am finished.
